A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for a Remembrance Sunday coffee on the 13th, it was wonderful to see the church filled with members of the community coming together to remember those who have served our country.

August 2016 Update on the Café Hub Project

We now have over 15 local volunteers on our committee, with expertise ranging from architecture and heritage projects to performance, nutrition and café management. We are currently finalising initial plans to go to the Diocese to apply for a faculty in the Autumn.

Messy Church

The first of our new style messy church sessions was held in the Angela Cobbold Hall on Sunday 24th.

IMG_164414 children of all ages and 25 adults enjoyed listening to the story of creation and singing songs with actions lead by Celia.  All then had fun sowing seeds, icing biscuits, colouring and sticking.  We ended the afternoon by sharing a delicious tea of sandwiches and cake.  Feedback from children, parents and helpers has been very positive.

Messy Church will now be a regular feature so please do join us at 4pm on the 4th Sunday of the month in the Angela Cobbold Hall.  All are very welcome, young and the not so young.  We would also love to hear from you if you would like to help with the activities.

February 2016 Update on the Angela Cobbold Hall & Café Hub Project

The PCC would like to thank everyone for their ongoing concern and care for All Saint’s Church and the Angela Cobbold Hall. It wants to reassure the community that everything is being done to ensure that the spiritual and social needs of the parish are met for many years to come.

We are a small parish, with no central funding. We therefore rely entirely on church collections and grant applications to cover the costs of the church and hall. We are currently running at an annual deficit of £5,000 (with only limited reserves). In addition you will be aware that there are urgent roof repairs to the church in the region of £28,000 and repairs to the hall estimated at between £20-25,000. Our first responsibility has to be to safeguard the church, otherwise both the church and the hall will have to close.

Having listened to advice from the Diocese and the personal views of those from the local community at the Open Meeting and through on-going correspondence, we have sadly concluded that without a very generous donation to cover not only the repair of the Hall and the Church, but also their respective upkeep well into the future, we have no choice but to sell the hall. The Cobbold family have confirmed that whilst they have no legal jurisdiction over the hall, they would prefer that the hall be sold and the proceeds used to fund a community hub within the church, rather than spend more money on the existing building. Bealings School are keen for us to provide a flexible space within the church building which they can use on a regular basis.

The Diocese likewise have advised that it is not prudent for the church to keep the hall, given the PCC’s precarious financial position. The Diocesan surveyor has recently carried out an assessment of the hall and looked at the different options available to the PCC. Its recommendation is that the PCC sell the hall with planning permission for a residential dwelling. An architect has begun to prepare the site for sale at no cost to the church. This process is likely to take six months and will of course include the usual public consultations and council approval.

This decision was not taken lightly and at this point we do not have a better alternative. If one should appear, the plans may be adjusted according to any additional resources that may be forthcoming. Christmas Community Lunch ’15

Community Christmas Lunch

IMG_083624 places were filled for Christmas Lunch at the Angela Cobbold Hall. The profits, totalling £125, were sent to UNICEF’s appeal to help the refugee children of Syria. The British Government will double donations to this appeal as part of the Department for International Development’s ‘Aid Match’ programme, meaning donations made at the meal will go even further.

The image of Mary and Joseph traveling to Bethlehem (the Posada) seemed particularly appropriate on this occasion. Thank-you to everyone for their generous support.

Community Lunches take place on the first Tuesday of the month at the Angela Cobbold Hall (rooms) between 12.30-1.3pm. Everyone is welcome. All profits from donations help to keep the hall running.

If you have not advertised before, you are invited to contact the co-ordinator (details below) with a note of your requirements, and you will be sent a list of charges etc.

If you were an advertiser in 2015, you are advised that the December-January issue is the last to carry the 2015 advertising, and that the advertising co-ordinator will be contacting you shortly to see whether you would like to renew or change your advertisement for 2016, commencing in February. All advertisements will need to be set up by mid-January.

New Service Rota

New Service Rota for 2016

Following on from the recent Benefice survey regarding Church Services, alongside an attempt to bring about a degree of continuity with the church services; i.e. the same time each month in the same church, (which is something that is widely recommended as being favoured by church goers) a six month trial is to be put into effect as from the start of the New Year.

Little Bealings will hold an 8am  Holy Communion (said) each 1st Sunday, 10am Holy Communion (sung) each 3rd Sunday, with a 4pm Messy Church service for younger members (but be assured any age welcome!) every 4th Sunday.

Great Bealings will hold an 8am Holy Communion (said) each 2nd Sunday, 10am Holy Communion (sung) each 1st Sunday.

Playford will hold a Family Communion on the 2nd Sunday, and a Holy Communion (sung) each 4th Sunday; please note that both of these will commence at the earlier time of 9am.

Culpho will continue with their 3pm evensong on the 3rd Sunday, but their monthly Wednesday 9.30am said Communion is moving to the 3rd Wednesday of the month.

Where there are five Sundays in the month a Benefice Songs of Praise will alternate between LB/GB/Playford.

Other services outside the ‘norm’ such as Ash Wednesday,  Maundy Thursday, Compline…….will be advertised and shared amongst the 4 churches.

Curry Evening

Supper Club Curry Evening

Curry EveningOn the 31st of October, the Little Bealings Supper Club held another Curry Evening graciously hosted by Ann and Bob Tate at Horsenden House.  Eighteen guests enjoyed prosecco and canapés, a Witch’s Cauldron starter and a selection of curries, dahl, Bombay potatoes, and rice followed by a pudding of kulfi and mango. A total of £370 was raised towards the repair of All Saints Church Roof.

Quizz WinnersMany thanks to all who attended and also those who were unable to attend but made a donation. A special thank you to Peter Kidd who could not attend but prepared a delicious winter vegetable curry, and to Kathy Price who prepared the canapés and starters and worked so hard to make the evening a success!  Congratulations to Alison Cheeseman and Tony Fear who wont the hotly contested Halloween quiz!  Our next event will be a lunch for those in the village who would prefer this to an evening meal. Date and venue have yet to be finalised but will be announced in the February newsletter so watch this space!
