Every 5 years the church building is inspected by an architect engaged by the Diocese. His task is to identify areas of the fabric of the building that require repair or replacement. The last inspection of All Saints took place in 2015. All those repairs categorised as high priority have been carried out. The report also advised to monitor the roof of the north aisle as the first signs of deterioration were detected.
The second phase of less urgent repairs is now being planned. These include restitching the quoins on the tower (where the masonry joins on the right angles) and repairing rendering on the west wall. The latter is contributing to the damp problem on that wall inside. In the meantime the north aisle roof has deteriorated to the extent that the rotting battening and felt needs replacing and the area retiled. The repairs are now urgent and if we are to keep the church watertight they need to be carried out before winter sets in.
The architect has guided us through the tendering process and we have been awarded the necessary permissions from the Diocese. We just need to raise the money. The total cost for all of this work including VAT is £35,000. The VAT can be reclaimed but this is still a huge sum for such a small community.
So far we have been awarded the following grants:
~ Suffolk Historic Churches Trust – £7,500
~ The Lord Belstead Charitable Trust – £2,000
~ The Norman Scarffe Charitable Trust – £750
~ The All Churches Trust – £1,000
~ Jill Ganzoni Charitable Trust – £2500
Further applications will be submitted over the next few weeks.
We have received donations from individuals totalling £2,970 (£3,564 with the gift aid refund) and we have also held a number of fundraising events including a garden party, afternoon tea and supper club gatherings raising a total to date of £4402. The BYAT production raised £550.
Total raised to date: £22,266
